Live365 Broadcaster Council

Friday, September 24, 2004
I have been elected to the Live365 Broadcaster Council. Cool.

The following was the "self-nomination" statement I submitted to get on tha ballot:

Dear Sir,

I am a founding member of Live365. I have been involved with radio programming for more than 20 years, as a disc jockey at the UCLA campus radio station (KLA), as a freelance club and party DJ, and as an assistant producer for the "Love Songs on the Coast" program at KOST 103.5FM in Los Angeles from 1987 to 1997. I am a regular reader and subscriber to radio and music industry publications (Billboard, Radio & Records, The Gavin Report, LARadio.com) since the 1980s, and have seen the radio broadcast industry evolve from the innocent "mom and pop" ownership playing vinyl records to the corporate-controlled cookie-cutter stations playing nothing but commercials and the same 10 songs day in and day out.

I have been broadcasting extensively in the Live/Relay mode. My expertise is in complex radio programming. The music is programmed using the ASQ feature in SAM. (I have used SAM v 2 but now I am back to v 1.) SAM then routes the music to WinAMP (Ver 5.) which streams to the Live365 server (56kbps) through my home DSL line. Programming-wise, I use a 7-day, 24-hour clock, which allow me to do things like "Love Songs at Night" and "All-80's Weekend" type shows. I purchased custom jingle packages to make the station sound more professional.

I have unique professional experiences and knowledge that, I believe, can contribute to the Live365 community. I am well-aware of the history and issues facing the industry. I want to see Live365 in every home, every car, every iPod.

Very truly yours,

Carl (steppermc)
PD/MD, Sleepy Cat Records

Songs I need to add

Thursday, September 23, 2004
  1. "Personal Jesus" by Marilyn Manson - this will be the first Marilyn Manson song I allow on my station.
  2. "Word Up" by Korn - another remake.

I usually dislike remakes, but these two versions brought out the raw energy and emotion that's missing in the originals.

Programming Issues

Wednesday, September 22, 2004
These are some of the issues that came up recently while listening to the station:
  1. I'm getting bored.
  2. The music I play is essentially good, but I need to spend a lot of time to decide what's good to play, and what can stand play after play.
  3. Jingles - a different voice, maybe?
  4. More different shows like "Lost and Found" to showcase music of different genre - Smooth Jazz? Christian? Cantonese? 70's?

Sleepy Cat Adds

Monday, September 13, 2004
Look for new tracks by The Killers, Hoobastank, Good Charlotte, Linkin Park, and Velvet Revolver on your Sleepy Cat Radio soon.

The "Lost and Found" show premieres today

Wednesday, September 08, 2004
I finally completed the programming of the show, including putting it in the ASQ program in the middle of the night last night. (My wife was saying this morning "If you were going to stay up in the middle of the night, then don't complain to me how tired you are...blah blah blah...) I hope it sounds good.

Aerosmith

Wednesday, September 01, 2004
I was just thinking - I've never heard "Walk This Way" on my station. So as of this morning, it has been programmed into the rotation.
